The focus of my series is my journey of the growth I have gone through mentally in my four years of high school.  I used this series to find the freedom in which I could let go of past pain and discomfort. This pain has been a big driving force for the series but as I worked I found I had grown past the pain and needed a new path, so as the series progressed the subject matter becomes less intense and more peaceful and contemplative, mirroring the mental journey I have gone through.  Take, for example, “Hello, from beyond” I wanted to examine the influence of technology on me as a person. I have always struggled with finding a balance between life and my phone. I find myself becoming passive about my life and the time I have to live my life due to the nature of screen addiction. Viewing the technology as a cosmic horror over taking the canvas as the subject (me) reaches out both in curiosity and weariness communicates the mixed feelings I have around my phone.  This series has given me the ability to find purpose in my art away from only ruminating on my pain.

I explore incorporating 2D and 3D elements in one piece. The contrast allows each element, subject v. the decorative elements, to speak for themselves because they are visually different. In “Duality” the floral design does not fade away due to the detailed main subject and the main subject doesn't fade away due to the visual contrast. For the sculptural aspects I am inspired by working with my hands. For example in “Issues” that sculpture, more so than others, is affected by physics and gravity. I had to pivot multiple times with quick thinking to try and stabilize it so it could stand on its own. That challenge of 3d and physics is one I love to explore. I loved experimenting with different ways to add texture.  For example, using different mediums ( acrylic paste v. air dry clay) and different technquces ( piping bag v. pallette knife texture) to elevate the pieces.
