How can I express my relationship with God in a realistic, creative, and thought provoking way? Through this series, I hope to reveal God’s loyalty, friendship, how he’s always present, and the creator aspect of God through my own action of creating. At the same time I wanted to share my own doubts and struggles with finding God and understanding Christianity. I base my work on visual metaphors that aid my understanding of God and my relationship with him. For example, Journey is a metaphor for living life with God: We walk the path of highs and lows together.
Many of the techniques I used were carried over from making dollhouses as a child. I’ve always had an interest in miniatures. I play with scale and make detailed dioramas. When showing God as a friend, I made him a similar size to my miniature character. When I was focusing on the protective, powerful aspect of God, I made my character very tiny compared to God’s hands. In contrast, my piece Lost explores feeling confused and far from God, God is shown as a butterfly, a small thread of hope. I make art that tells stories that hopefully makes the viewers want to know more about God or that resonates with other Christians.
