Chloe Tsang

I wanted to ask how dim sum has been inside my whole life. Ever since I was born, I have consistently gone to these restaurants every Saturday with my family. From celebrating exciting events with relatives to relaxing with my grandparents, dim sum serves as a time to deepen my connection with my Cantonese culture and my own family. The magical element along the works serves as a whimsical way for me to show how I think of dim sum. 

At first, I wanted to focus on drawing realistic foods and how I am in the restaurants, but as the series progressed, I included fantastical elements to show the magic of eating and having fun throughout the meals. For example, on odd numbered slides, I incorporated little orange cats to roam around the dishes like they’re exploring the table. My color palette is brighter to reflect the silliness and joy of being presented with a delicious feast. I had fun having my family’s weekly dim sum gathering as my inspiration for these works and hope that people are inspired to go out and eat dim sum!
