This series is primarily empathetic — using my art to help me explore and understand experiences unlike my own. It focuses on the personal effects of childhood trauma, specifically adultification [children being treated with adult expectations and responsibilities] in both a person’s immediate childhood, and their experiences and relationships into adulthood. A priority of mine was representing the multidimensionality of adultification, both in its different manifestations, and how it intersects with certain social identities — like race and gender. I did this by splitting my overall series into two parallel “mini-series,” distinguished by color (red and blue) and respective focus characters, with their own respective social identities.
“Red” is predominantly an exploration of physical adultification and race; white-supremacy’s entitlement over POC’s bodies intersecting with adult entitlement over children’s bodies. “Blue” is predominantly an exploration of mental adultification and gender/sexism; adult entitlement over children’s expression intersecting with patriarchy’s entitlement over women/girl’s expression. Gender-nonconformity and objectification are the biggest overlapping themes between the two parallel “mini-series,” because of how those two things exist at the intersection of all these social identities and emotional/trauma experiences. There's also a factor present in how childhood trauma can affect gender non-comforming people in unique ways, because of how feelings associated with childhood trauma — vulnerability, sorrow, fear — are feminized by our society. That corresponding mixed gender symbolism is present throughout the whole series.
