Amaya Kucala

I aim to portray how my imagination as a child ran wild and how I dreamed to experience a world full of wonder and magic.This concept is explored through my artwork as I examine how everyday memories like spending time with family, going to ballet class and spending time in nature evolved into surreal and fantastical spaces. By recollecting my favorite childhood memories I transformed everyday moments into surreal, whimsical, and imaginative spaces using color, rhythm, symbolic elements and playful perspectives.

Combining these everyday activities and giving abilities to things such as toys, sweets, animals and music, I blended reality with fantasy. These abilities are exemplified as fantastical elements: fairies baking, talking stuffed animals, and swimming with a mermaid. These elements highlight my childhood perception and how I explored a world of possibilities and curiosity at a young age. I hold the nostalgia of my childhood very close as it deeply shaped the way I see the world and who I am today. Through my artwork, I hope to evoke a sense of reflection so that the viewers may reflect on their own childhood memories as well.
