I am not the type of person who is able to express emotion clearly to others, so I came up with this question: “What if one’s emotions were visible as cute creatures?”. I am interested in Psychology and social dynamics and the role of the unconscious. I begin with a person having a strong emotional moment which is reflected by the creatures with the idea of how one feels and how it affects them, but as I progressed, I explored outer factors like environment and people, and my work began to focus towards not only the interaction between the creature and people, but those outer factors too.
In each piece, I tried to show a specific emotion. I explored perspective, lighting, posture and expressions to make the emotion clear. For example, I used a low angle for Overwhelmed and Pride, which portrays strong emotion to create the sense of power. With lighting, I used darker tones for negative emotions, brighter ones for positive emotions. I adjusted the creatures' expressions and body language so that the emotions were clearer. Throughout the process, I learned how visual choice shapes viewers' interpretation, helping me find many different ways to express emotions.
