Class of 2024
My investigation explores the distortion of rooms originally referencing the liminal space aesthetic, an internet aesthetic defined as abandoned rooms that are eerie, nostalgic, or even dream-like; oftentimes it is linked with horror imagery. I have always been interested in horror and more recently, fascinated by gore and the human body. While the two contrast with each other, with liminal space using a more subtle approach, I aim to take inspiration from both to create unique imagery.
Starting out, I read a study titled, “Structural deviations drive an uncanny valley of physical places,” by Alexander Diel and Michael Lewis. I learned how elements such as “lack [of objects and social presence]”, can make a space unsettling. Additionally, I used human anatomy and gore to accentuate the eeriness of the scene. Towards the end, I began a new approach—flatter designs and video game inspired—with less emphasis on space and more emphasis on objects within the space. I hope to invite the viewer to an uneasy environment in each piece.
