In this series, my imagination has created a new world to explore, focusing on the involvement of real world elements to make the art more approachable and easier to understand; and taking a more surrealist approach to them with their scale and color. The series shows the journey of a character and how they explore this new planet. My character interacts with the landscapes and the creatures of this planet (specifically aquatic animals) to bring a liviness and relatability to the work. This familiarity helps to create a more inviting atmosphere allowing for the viewer to feel as if they are there with the character.
I’m influenced by the art in Studio Ghibli films, such as “Ponyo”, and by graffiti and street art with the use of paint pens and bold mark making. I display an imaginary, childlike environment through the use of bright coloring and doodled markings. In my practice, I design creatures using aquatic animals as my inspiration to add to the accessibility of the works; the alterations made to the creatures such as additional eyes, unusual patterns, and unrealistic colors develop a surreal twist to the creatures adding a sense of wonder. I also use recurring images in the backgrounds of each piece to create a feel of continuity demonstrating the characters journey, such as the grass leading from the Entrance to the left bottom corner of The Horizon.
