My series is about my interpretation of how animals may look when humans are long gone. I wanted to make the creatures look familiar, but nothing like what we currently have, to evoke the question, “What animal did this use to be?” I add to familiarity and believability by making the creatures look like taxidermy or reconstructed models of living or extinct creatures. I want them to look like they could exist. The double nostrils on some animals are meant to show the environmental impact humans in the past had on the atmosphere, indicating low oxygen levels and thus needing to intake more air.
This series is based on a previous series of drawings I made last year. Here, I have taken the animals I invented in my older work and bring them to life as 3D creatures. When I made my first sculpture, which incorporated a lobster claw, I decided to continue including real animal parts in each of my sculptures. For example, the bird sculpture has real feathers, and the cat has horsehair for whiskers. I think these parts add a more taxidermy-like quality to my works. I also tried experimenting with different materials, such as using tape and glue instead of clay or using different fabrics.
