My inquiry follows a narrative about a painter who has been commissioned to paint a cursed painting. It’s rumored that the painter will meet certain death if he fails to satisfy the curse by completing the painting. He investigates and finds the rumor to be true. In an attempt to fulfill his commission, he falls through the painting into the curse's realm. Surrounded by the unfamiliar red sky and foliage, he urgently seeks to find the curse before his body deteriorates completely.
From the beginning, I experimented with different ways I could develop my art while staying within the 2D design criteria. Eventually I found halftones were best for showing depth. For some pieces, I experimented by using a variety of panels to delineate a scene, which helped push the narrative. As I worked with the narrative, I realized that it’s a metaphor for my own creative process. I need to be in a state of urgency to be able to come up with ideas. The curse represents a repeating cycle of waiting for inspiration and working within a small time frame, a habit that needs to be broken in order to preserve the quality of art.
