Class of 2022
I've never been a fine artist and made museum pieces. My favorite is manga. While they have text, most are at their best when visuals take the reins and tell the story. In this series, I investigated what makes manga look special and attempted to apply these techniques to my work.
The first place I started researching was within manga such as Parasyte and Bleach. I am working within the boundaries by using screen tones. This pays homage to budget constraints that affected the look of older manga like in Rotten Water. I investigated screen tones and panel spacing first. As I moved on, I also looked at working on more general illustration techniques like one and two-point perspective and proper body proportion, as in the piece In Shadows. I also wanted to explore stories and ideas popular in manga, such as the question of What makes us human? This is best shown in Why do you feel? This is all to create similar work to the art I love and improve my illustration skills with these techniques.
