I am investigating how Filipino Gods and Goddesses have influenced the way the Philippine culture has changed over many years. My persona, Niwi, is on an adventure with Filipino deities as she learns how their abilities influenced traditional fables and folktales.
I incorporated deities that represented who I am, specifically using figures from the Tagalog, Visayan and Kapampangan regions. In work 3, I was influenced by the Visayan Goddess of the sea, water, and the Underworld, Magwayen. In work 4, I used the Tagalog Goddess of Combat and the Moon and Night, Mayari. The deities that I used in work 5, involve the Kapampangan God of War and Death, Aring Sinukuan, and his wife, Mingan. For work 6, I used the Tagalog Goddess of Stars and Mayari’s sister, Tala. So as I continued progressing through works 3-6, I’ve begun integrating important elements that resonate with each deity, such as incorporating the ocean and its creatures with Magwayen, and the environment that best suits them. In my most recent works, I’ve tried to go with a different color style, trying to use more digital paintbrushes and inks so my work isn't so two-dimensional but rather contoured and textural compared to my older pieces. Through my investigation, I have further developed a better understanding of how these deities influenced Filipino culture and stories.
