My series depicts memories and pictures from my childhood. I used this series as a way to feel ready to take the next step into my life. I wanted to commemorate my childhood to help me move on to adulthood. For example, Earliest Memory is a painting of my earliest childhood memory of having an interest in art, and Alisha is a painting I did from a picture of my sister and I representing her importance throughout my life.
When I started the series, I was thinking about how to say goodbye to my childhood, but after the first few works, I realized that I wasn’t looking for a goodbye, as much as a way to carry my childhood with me. I use watercolor because it’s sheerness reminds me of how I think memories are perceived. And my use of torn transfer paper and colored pencil mark making represents the overlapping of memories.
