Using my series I want to investigate insecurity, its contributing factors and the ways it can show itself through people. There are many things we experience that cause us to doubt ourselves; I want to explore what those things are, and what effects they have on people.
I wanted to go deeper than surface level insecurity and beyond appearance. Each piece is connected to an individual and their insecurities, or a general concept that can cause insecurity-- I convey these vulnerabilities through visual metaphor and symbolism. Before I conceptualize a piece I interview subjects and ask them questions about their insecurities. I want to know what experiences lead people to be insecure and how society and media contribute to general self-doubt. Those I interview are often hesitant to share their insecurities, and give vague, surface level answers. I understand it can be hard for people to acknowledge and discuss. I want to connect artwork with real people and experiences, providing an outlet to listen and support those who need it. I want to show not only what those insecurities are, but where they stem from, the lasting effects, and what it’s like to go through life with them.
