My series is about how people deal with depression. Through my family’s stories and my stories, I wanted to show some of the feelings and thoughts of someone with depression.
I explored the use of texture and color with each piece. The subjects are green human figures, anyone can experience depression so i don't want to limit the subject. I unify the paintings using Impressionism, inspired by Walter Gordon Philips and Franz Marc. These artists use bold colors and strokes in their work. In Many of my works I use a contrasting red figure or color to represent the sort of unnerving feelings that one may have. In “Red” I used a thin texture layer to show a consumption effect, the red figure is the feeling that grips on to the green figure. I played with how the palette knife creates texture to create visible disturbance within the piece. I use escapism in many pieces like in “Sleep” showing my own habits of shutting out the world and falling asleep just not to be awake. Escapism is one of the unhealthy ways that I have used when dealing with my mental health. Other pieces were inspired from how family members describe dealing with depression.
