Throughout the process of creating these works, there were several methods I repeatedly sought refuge in, the first and foremost being spontaneous/impulsive decision-making. I wanted my theme of consciousness to feel heavily apparent in the visual aspect of my work by drawing/painting/gluing in as pure a flow of my own consciousness as possible. I wanted the compositions to appear as though they hadn’t been planned out extensively prior to their creation, and do so by working fluidly with my materials, covering things up long after their development, adding sketch marks in later stages instead of beginning with them, etc. In addition to working on impulse, I also experimented heavily with the materials themselves, hoping to convey my human experience of stretching and pulling the materials to new uses. For most of my artistic career, I have stuck to conventional uses of materials and developed my technical skills rather than an individual, creative voice. I hoped to depart from my usual way of creation in this body of work, allowing inspiration to drive me, rather than pre-conceived notions of what my art should end up looking like.
