Built as a boarding house, the Farm was a major working dairy farm starting in the 1800’s through the early 1900s. Originally located on a hill leading up to Whitehead, a cliff on the southeast end of Cushing’s Island, the Farm provided fresh milk and dairy products for guests of the Ottawa House, a resort hotel on the Island owned by the Grand Trunk Railroad, with a largely Canadian clientele.

The Farm was moved to its current location in the 1890’s when the rear of the Island was acquired for a coastal defense installation protecting the entrance to Portland Harbor. It is now owned by the Meacham family
