American Mathematics Competition
The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition, some of the later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course. The contest will take place at Miller after school on January 27th 2026. Announcements will be made for when students can find their room assignments.

Math Olympiad - Division M
Math Olympiad - Division M
Math Olympiad is a problem-solving contest offered to elementary and middle school students. Highest individual scorer receives a medal. Top 50% of participating students receive an award patch and silver pins to the top 10% and gold pins to the top 2% of scorers. Perfect score students receive a medallion. Try the sample contest to see if you are interested in joining. Problems of the week are also available for more practice and their solutions.
Five contests will be administered in-person at Miller from 3:15 pm to 3:45 pm on Wednesdays: 11/12, 12/10, 1/14, 2/11, 3/11. Room assignments will be posted the week of the first contest.

MathCounts Club & Competitions
MathCounts Club & Competitions
The Competition Series has 4 levels of live, in-person math competitions - school, chapter, state and national. In the fall, students work with their coaches to prepare for the competition, using resources provided by MATHCOUNTS. Then, competitions begin in the Winter and run through the Spring.

The Club is formed based on try-outs that will take place after school on October 14th 2025. Approximately 20 students from all grades will be chosen to participate in the club based on top scorers. The MathCounts Chapter competition is held in February 2025, where ten students will be selected to represent Miller Middle School. You are strongly encouraged to familiarize yourself with the type of problems presented in this competition before signing up https://www.mathcounts.org/

The Harker Math Invitational (HMI) is an annual math competition run by the Harker School for middle-school students in and beyond the Bay Area. Sample contests can be found here.

Miller brings two teams of six students for each grade level to compete in both an individual and team contest round. Students will need to try-out to represent Miller at the HMI. Try-outs will be held on February 4th, 2026 and announcements will be made prior to the try-out date. The contest is held early March on a Saturday at the Harker campus.

Miller math contests are made possible by parent donations. Please consider donating $20 (cash or check payable to Miller Middle School) given to your child's math teacher. If funding is not met, all math contests programs will be suspended for the year.

State law permits only voluntary financial contributions from participating families to support various school activities or programs. All students will be allowed to participate regardless of whether a donation is made. Families that choose to contribute may do so in any amount. A suggested donation of $20 will help sustain our program at its current level, including AMC, MathCounts, and Math Olympiad contests.
