Upstanders:

What is an Upstander

An Upstander is someone who stands up and speaks out when they witness unjustice being done to another. This includes when a student witnesses a student being bullied or being treated unfairly by another student/s.

How I can help?

Take Action.  It is important to know that we often think of bullying as being between the bully and the person being bullied but often there is a third person/s, the bystanders.

Bystanders are those people/student/s who see bullying taking place but DO NOT ACT.

Bystanders are as much of a part of the bullying equation as the bully and the person being bullied. A bystanders that sees something but does not say something or find help actually contributes to the ability of a bully to have power.

Bystanders can become UPSTANDERS. At KMS, we need Upstanders in our community

What can an Upstander do?

An Upstander can speak up during a situation and/ or can find a person to support for those being bullied and for the bully themselves.

A person who chooses to bully and the person being bullied need support. We need more upstanders as they help the community as a whole. Upstanders help everyone in the community know that they matter and that what is needed is more communication and understanding of each other.

Why this matters?

As a community, it is easy to find people like you and to find people who are different from you. What matters is that no matter who you are, you know that you matter and will be teated with respect and kindness.  Whatever the situation, even during conflict, there is way to find soluations that include the feelings and concerns of all involved. What matters is that there is open, nurturing communication.
