Department overview
The CTE Department at Calexico High School is tasked with the opportunity to challenge students and prepare them for careers or continued education in the industry! Many of our courses are A-G!
CTE courses are designed to be a minimum of two years. Students may be involved in courses three years in some pathways, including an Introductory course, Concentrator and Capstone. Please encourage your students to become a pathway completer!
Agriculture - Plant & Animal Science
Courses Taught:
Veterinary Science (concentrator) & Advanced Veterinary Science (capstone)
Plant & Soil Science (concentrator) Advanced Plant and Soil Science (capstone)

The Plant Science pathway introduces students to growing, planting, maintaining and harvesting plants plants for crop production. Students get experience through hands on activities to practice these skills related to plant production.
The Animal Science pathway introduces students to animal agriculture and the care of livestock and small animals. The capstone course (Advanced Animal Science) builds upon the animal care and students begin to use medical procedures in Veterinary Medicine.
Both of these pathways lead to career or college readiness in an entry level career pathway.
Agriculture - Horticulture
Courses Taught: Ornamental Horticulture & Agricultural Leadership
Taught by: Mr. Mendoza
In the Ornamental Horticulture class the goal is to teach students the skills concerned with the growing and marketing of plants and flowers. In this class we want to expose students to fields like floristry, landscape design, and the turf management industry.
In the leadership class, we want to utilize the Calexico Chapter of Future Farmers of America as a vehicle to teach students how to improve their personal leadership skills; such as public speaking, parliamentary procedures, and group/project management capabilities.
Agriculture

Introduction to Agriculture introduces students to agricultural commodities and FFA.
My introduction to agriculture 9th grade course is a Career Technical Education (CTE) class that serves as the entry level course to the Agriculture and Natural Resources Industry Sector and the agriculture courses offered by the Calexico High School Agriculture Department.
Agriculture Mechanics

This class is housed in the wood shop, we do a little welding, a little electrical, a little plumbing, a little fabricating, a little tractor operation, but it's mostly woodworking.

Fashion and Interior Design -Family and Consumer Sciences
Courses Taught: Fashion, Textiles, and Apparel (Concentrator) Apparel, Manufacturing and Production (Capstone)
Taught By: Ms. Hite
Courses in the Fashion and Design Pathway prepare students to understand the social, psychological, and design aspects of apparel, design elements and principles, fashion trends and cycles throughout history, and clothing selection.
These courses also teach students sewing skills related to apparel and home décor construction, applying color theory and design principles.
Also addressed are the clothing selection and construction for those with special needs, sustainable fashion, and clothing alterations and recycling.
Employment preparation is addressed with the creation of an Employment Portfolio, and investigation into employment opportunities in the Fashion and Design Industry.
Health Science & Medical Technology
Courses Taught: Medical Terminology (concentrator) and Medical Office Assistant (capstone)
Taught By: Ms. Sierra Galindo
Ms. Sierra Galindo teaches the Healthcare Operational Support Services Pathway. It is made up of Medical Terminology and Medical Assistant. In these classes, students learn the basics of medical office practices from medical terminology to how to perform basic clinical procedures such as first aid, CPR, and blood pressure checks.
Ms. Galindo has been at CHS for 17 years.
Hospitality, Tourism & Recreation
Food Service Sector
Courses Taught: Food Technology (concentrator) and Advanced Food Technology (capstone)
Taught by: Chef Fernando Nunez
Culinary Arts program prepares students with food production, preparation, and service skills for employment institutional, commercial, or independently owned food establishments or other food and hospitality industry occupations. Instruction includes topics such as planning, selecting, storing, purchasing, preparing, testing, serving and selling of quality food and food products; nutritive values; safety and sanitation; use and care of commercial equipment; management of food establishments; cost and profitability analysis; side work and customer orders; and handling cash and cash transactions

Information and Communications Technology
Courses Taught: Computer Applications (concentrator) and Computer Technician (capstone)

In Computer Applications students learn about Microsoft Office productivity tools. They have the opportunity to get certified on Microsoft office (Word, Power point and Excel) this certification is given by TestOut. They also learn HTML and CSS language used to create a webpage. In Computer Technician course student learn JavaScript language used to create apps
Manufacturing & Product Development - Welding
Courses Taught: Welding (concentrator) and Advanced Welding (capstone)
Taught By: Mr. Camarillo
In my course students are Introduced to the understanding of metal joining (welding). They first start with safety and Shop familiarization (SOP). Students are then slowly introduced to different welding process and equipment familiarization.
As my goal, students will later apply gained knowledge in a series of metal project in order to assess and many cases continue the pathway as a career.
Marketing, Sales, and Services
Courses Taught: Entrepreneurship/Self-Employment (concentator) and Advanced Entrepreneurship/Self-Employment (capstone)
Taught By: Mr. Gastelum
Want to be your own boss and gain the rewards of your hard work. This course is designed to introduce students to the concept of entrepreneurship. Will go over discipline and hard work that is required to be a successful entrepreneur. Students will acquire knowledge, and understand the impact of entrepreneurship on market economies. Students will examine and develop the personal traits and fundamental behaviors to becoming a successful entrepreneur and they will be exposed to the steps including the development of business plans and marketing. Lastly, they will understand the importance of making money work for them.
Public Services

These courses prepare high school students with the basic curricular, physical, and disciplinary skills to complete and excel in a basic law enforcement academy
Transportation

Course for anyone who wants to use a car, motorcycle, or truck to get around. We start with the basics and during the two year course you leave building an ZEV, zero emission vehicle.
