Participation in varsity athletics requires time, dedication, enthusiasm, and hard work. But perhaps most of all, it requires a great deal of courage. In track and field, as in life, people sometimes suffer hardships that break them from their typical existence. These shattering moments stay with the athlete long after practice or competition. Yet, these times often create an instant in which the athlete becomes the teacher and the unspoken instruction---be brave. Sara Brummel, Tiger track and field athlete from 2002-2003, is courage personified; her emotional stability and spirit are larger than any honor or medal imaginable.
The Brummel Award will be presented each year to the track and field athlete who best represents courage and perseverance. She, like Sara before her, has run the race, pushed past barriers and hardships, and has never given up. This courage is more impressive than any time, height, or distance; this courage is contagious, and it inspires others to try and be the same in their individual challenges.
