Karon Lackland is a 1981 graduate of Wheaton Central High School. She has the distinction as being the first female state champion in school history with her win in the 400 meters at the 1981 IHSA State Championships. With that victory, her time of 55.1h was the fastest time run in the short girls track & field history in Illinois.
Karon would finish her Tiger Track & Field career as a 4-time state metalist (All-State) in three different events. In 1980, she finished 4th as a junior in the 400 Meters. In the 1981 season, she would leave Charleston with metals in the 200 Meters (6th Place) , 400 Meters (State Champion) and the 800 Meter Medley (8th Place).
At the time of her graduation, Karon held an astonishing five outdoor school records. She is still the school record holder in the 200 Meters, 400 Meters and 800 Meter Medley.
She went on to compete collegiately for both Eastern Illinois University and College of DuPage. While at EIU, she was a part of their school record 4x400 meter relay. That time of 3:42.39 is still the school outdoor record. After leaving EIU, she went back to the Chicago Suburbs to attend COD. Competing for Chaparrals, she was the 1984 NJCAA National Outdoor Champion in the 400 Meters running a school record of 55.88.
In the Fall of 2010, Karon's career was recognized by Wheaton Warrenville South with her induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
Karon continues to give back to the program with her attendance at the Annual Tiger Invitational as well as her inspirational talks to the team. At the 2014 Tiger Invitational, the Wheaton Warrenville South Girls Track & field Program renamed the 400 Meters at the Tiger Invitational to honor Karon's accomplishments.
