Curriculum  &  Grading

•  Following the district Art Curriculum, we will focus on various techniques for creating artwork, in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional work.  Not only will the students learn that there are a multitude of ways to portray people, places, objects and emotions through art, but on a higher level, they will learn that there are different ways of approaching almost any subject matter.  As we go through the program, the art projects will focus on the elements of art: line, shape, color, value, texture, form, and space, while incorporating the principles of design: repetition, balance, emphasis, contrast, and unity. 

• Along with the elements and principles, the students will explore works by the masters, hopefully gaining an appreciation for all types of art from various times and genres throughout history.  In the coming months, your child will view, and study, works by artists such as:

 Jean-Michel Basquiat, Romero Britto, Bisa Butler, Mary Cassatt, Marc Chagall, Edgar Degas, Janet Fish, Paul Gauguin, Keith Haring, Edward Hopper, Frida Kahlo, Wassily Kandinsky, Yayoi Kusama, Jacob Lawrence, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Takashi Murakami, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Pierre A. Renoir, Faith Ringgold, Diego Rivera, Norman Rockwell, Georges Seurat, Amy Sherald, Alma Thomas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Kehinde Wiley , and more!

• Finally, we will discover how various cultures create(d) art.  This will include projects that reflect the cultural arts from countries around the world, such as: the ancient arts from Egypt, Greece, and Rome; Sumi-e ink painting from Japan and China; the era of Harlem Renaissance, and the Hispanic craft arts. 

Please note that art projects are not assessed on how good a student is artistically.
