James Howard Monroe was a Wheaton resident who was drafted during the Vietnam War. During his deployment, James Monroe committed a selfless act, saving several wounded men in his platoon. This act cost James his life and subsequently earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor. Here at Monroe Middle School, his heroism lives on each and every day.
Each year, the 6th grade ELA teachers take time to tell his story while defining the core values of the Medal of Honor. Each student is expected to model their lives through these core values. Students will be asked to demonstrate these core values in their daily lives. They will also be quizzed on the definitions of each of the core values.
