His first name was Ralph, but in England it is pronounced “Rafe”, and he never went by that.
His father was a minister and passed away when he was two.
His uncle was the famous biologist, Charles Darwin, who came up with the theory of Evolution.
He began taking piano lessons from his aunt when he was five years old.
After learning the piano well, he began to learn to play the violin.
He wrote his first short piece of music when he was six, and it was called “The Robin’s Nest”.
He went to music school for college, and got degrees in both music and history
Adeline Fisher became his wife around the time of his 25th birthday. They never had children.
He married his second wife 5 years before he passed away. Her name was Ursula Wood.
He enjoyed learning English folk songs that had never been written down before and writing them down so that they could be learned by everyone.
He became a soldier in World War 1 and served as a field ambulance worker.
He was asked by English royalty several times to become a knight, and refused every time. He said he didn’t want to have obligations to authority figures.
Like a couple of other musicians, eventually he went completely deaf. It did not keep him from composing.
He passed away from a heart attack while he was sleeping at age 85.
