Welcome to a new school year! We are very excited to be working with you and your child this year. We hope that this year will be challenging, yet rewarding for your child. Please read and discuss the following information with your child in order for everyone to have a successful school year.
Student Expectations
Always do your best.
Complete all assignments neatly.
Raise your hand before you speak during a lesson.
Listen quietly while others speak.
Be respectful of yourself and others.
Complete all assignments on time.
Follow the directions of all teachers.
Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
ClassDojo
This school year, we will be using ClassDojo. ClassDojo is a web based program which allows teachers to track students’ behaviors (positive and negative) easily and efficiently. The program is based on points, and students can be given positive points for things like being on task, being respectful, participating, and working hard. On the other hand, points can be taken away if students are off task, talking out, or unprepared. Do not worry if your child occasionally loses a point. They have many opportunities to gain positive points to increase their Dojo Percentage.
One of the greatest features of ClassDojo is that it allows parents and teachers to communicate easily through the ClassDojo app or website. Just download the free app on your phone or go to the website, then enter your parent access code to get signed up. You will instantly know when your child earns positive or negative points, and receive general reminders from the teachers.
If a student has below a 70% in ClassDojo points at the end of the week, they will receive a lunch detention. Additionally, if a student has below 60% at the end of the week, they will serve an after school detention the following week.
Please keep in mind that while ClassDojo is our primary behavior system, teachers can and will assign detentions for extreme or repeated misbehavior.
Grades
The following shows how grades will be figured in each class. We cannot stress enough how important it is for students to complete homework. It is also extremely important that students study for tests and quizzes.
Math: 60% Summative Science: 60% Summative
30% Formative 40% Formative
10% Facts
Reading: 60% Summative Social Studies: 60% Summative
40% Formative 40% Formative
Language: 50% Writing
30% Summative
20% Formative
Formative assessment (assessment for learning) occurs during the stage of learning in which students are "forming" their understanding of the concepts being taught. Formative assessments that might be used for grading purposes include class discussion, daily work, and homework.
Summative assessment (assessment of learning) occurs at a point in the learning where the teacher is assessing and evaluating mastery of the concepts being taught. Summative assessments that might be used for grades include tests, major projects or products (completed at school), exit tickets, quizzes, and presentations.
Homework Policy
We feel that homework helps to reinforce what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits. Students are expected to do their best job on each homework assignment. We also expect homework to be neat.
If students have incomplete homework, they will have one additional day to complete it with 20% off their grade. If it is still not completed, the student will have to the end of the quarter to complete the assignment with 50% off their grade. It is extremely important that students have their homework completed on time.
If a student is absent from school, he or she will be given one day for each day missed to complete the work.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us by calling the school, messaging us on ClassDojo, or emailing us.
