Public School Trustee Election
Sisters and Brothers, as you may know, (advance polls are now open) but on October 20, not only are we voting for our Mayor and Councilors, we are also electing a new Board of Trustees for Edmonton Public Schools.
The Trustees are a vital part of our working relationship with our employer, so it’s very important to vote for someone who understands the issues custodial staff face. While we have no delusions that once voted in, a Trustee will be at our side on all issues, it’s imperative that we NOT elect someone who will actively be against our very existence.
With that in mind, Local 474 undertook the task of polling the candidates in each Ward with questions that we believed represented our concerns. As a result, these are our recommendations.
To be clear, we are NOT “telling you” who to vote for, that is and will always be a free choice.
Ward A
We strongly endorse Trustee Sherri O’Keefe
Ward B
We support Linda Lindsay
Ward C
We endorse Holly Nichol
Ward D
We strongly endorse Nancy Hunt
Ward E
We support Sarah Doll
Ward F
We strongly endorse Trustee Julie Kusiek
Ward G
We strongly endorse Trustee Saadiq Sumar
Ward H
We support Melanie Hoffman
Ward I
We strongly endorse Trustee Jan Sawyer
·
Once again, your vote is YOUR choice. These are just our recommendations

This six-hour interactive course is designed to give participants an introduction to (or review of) workplace health and safety for workers. The course provides an overview of workers’ basic health and safety rights (Right to Know, Right to Participate, and Right to Refuse Unsafe Work). It also explores worker-focused principles, tools and resources for making safer workplaces.
Our October General Meeting has been moved to October 18, 2025 due to scheduling conflicts. At that meeting there will be elections for vacant Executive positions:

Hi Everyone
Below is a detailed list of the CUPE Local 474 election process over the next few months.
Election Process 2025 for CUPE 474 Executive Board
In terms of our Local’s annual elections, The CUPE 474 Executive Board has determined the most fair and efficient way to conduct these elections in person.
The Local will conduct one election each week throughout the summer, beginning on Saturday, June 14, 2025 where the office will be open to members from 7 AM to 7 PM to allow 12 hours of time to come and vote. After the initial Saturday election for President, elections for each subsequent position will occur on Fridays, where the office will be open to members from 7 AM to 7 PM each day to allow 12 hours of time to come and vote.
There are details below on which position will be open, and how to become nominated, who can be eligible to run for office, how to determine who is nominated, and how the information regarding the successful candidate will be communicated. Please contact the office if more information is required.
Eligibility for Office
Our bylaws statement on eligibility for a member to run for office:
In order to be eligible as an Executive Officer of the Local
(President, Executive Vice-President, Member Liaison , Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Chief Shop Steward, Communications Officer and 2nd Vice President), a candidate must have been a member in continuous good standing for not less than one year prior to being elected and have attended a minimum of fifty per cent (50%) of the General Membership meetings, prior to the June General Membership meeting.
In order to be eligible for trustee, the only requirement is that a candidate is a member in good standing, for not less than one year prior to being elected.
Nominations, Ties, and Scrutineers
Nominations would open for all open positions (listed below) on June 3 and would have to be submitted to the office electronically;
· The office would contact those that are nominated and ask if they want their name to stand and then confirm if they meet the election criteria for the position they are nominated for.
· A list of Nominated peoples’ names would be on the website and on Facebook. You would also see the names of the nominated individuals when you come to the office to vote.
· Results of elections would be published on the website and on Facebook page by the Tuesday after each election.
· If there is a tie vote for any position, we would have no other option other than to have another election for that position, on a different day that has yet to be determined.
You do not have to be in town to be nominated, however, you do have to be in town (in person) to vote.

Collective Agreement and Bylaws, Me Too and Summer Hours
Hi Everyone
Hopefully everyone has received a copy of the new Collective Agreement and Bylaws at your site. If you have not received it by 3 pm May 16, please let us know and we can have it sent out to you.
For Supply staff, there should have been an extra copy of each sent to each site. Please check with on-site staff for extras. If there are no extra copies available please let us know what site you will be at starting on Tuesday next week and we will have a copy sent to you.
Then we will meet with EPSB management to get numbers finalized as a result of the "me too" Letter of Understanding. We will then get the Collective Agreement reprinted and sent out again. We will update everyone when we have confirmation of when the additional raises and retroactive pay will be issued.
We are still waiting for summer hours confirmation from the Division. We have asked for this clarification and confirmation ASAP. As soon as we receive this information we will send it out to you. Thanks.
