Current Research Project:
Multiple organizations, including the USDA Forest Service, ICIMOD, SilvaCarbon, and SERVIR-Hindu Kush Himalaya, collaborate on this NASA-funded project. SERVIR is a collaboration between NASA, USAID, and prominent geospatial organizations geared toward forming partnerships with various nations. ICIMOD is responsible for the implementation of the SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) Initiative, one of the five regional centers of the SERVIR network. Through the SERVIR-HKH Initiative, ICIMOD collaborates with partner nations to resolve their unique challenges and requirements.
The project aims to take advantage of recent advances in sensor technology and computational platforms, which have substantially increased the scope and accuracy of remote sensing observations. Specifically, a multi-sensor forest emission monitoring application will be utilized. The project seeks to address the themes of land cover, land use change, and ecosystems in the context of the SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. The initiative will collaborate with ICIMOD to establish a system for documenting trends in forest-related emissions at both the national (Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh) and subnational levels. The project also aims to improve existing SERVIR products and add radar data where it makes sense. With the help of canopy profile data and partnerships with the SilvaCarbon program, the project hopes to improve statistical inferences from space. This will help improve monitoring efforts, national commitments, and results-based payments in the HKH region.
