Per the USDA website: "All foods sold at school during the school day are required to meet nutrition standards. The Smart Snacks in School regulation applies to foods sold a la carte, in the school store, vending machines, and any other venues where food is sold to students."
Although a la carte items are only sold to high school students, we wanted to create a list of items that parents and/or guardians could use as a starting point when looking for healthier items to send with their child(ren) as a snack or for classroom parties. These items have all been checked using the Smart Snack Calculator.
If you have an item you would like to see if it meets the nutrition standard to be considered a Smart Snack, use this link https://foodplanner.healthiergeneration.org/calculator/ and enter the information requested.
PLEASE NOTE: These items are only suggestions because they meet the nutrition standards that are applied to items the school could sell. These are not the only snack items you can send with your child(ren).
