There once was a frugli named Gruegon. He lived in the fictional world of Brunope, where there were many vampires and werewolves, and a monarchy called the Celestial Triad was composed of three components of beings. While these different groups live in the same world, Gruegon's story is far away from all this drama, in a more peaceful land known as Pathan, an island country in the world's southern hemisphere. It comprises froglets, beings that we would attribute to frogs.
In this tale, we will learn of the origin of Gruegon and the many heroes he looked up to in his short life. We begin our story in the pond of the Prya tribe, where we meet a group of frogs committed to preserving the pond. This pond is surprisingly self-sufficient and good at producing food for froglets, such as crickets and fruit flies. In the distance of the pond, we see Gruegon acting as security for the pond to any outside tribes, as they are very isolationist.
When screening many of these travelers, he often has to look at the frog pouches for any cultural references to the other tribes. However, most of the time, he does not find anything. However, today was a day unlike any other. A member of the Tinki Tribe tried to disguise themselves as part of the area police force to infiltrate the tribe to gather valuable intel for his people. Nevertheless, that certainly was not going to happen.
"Thraka, I will need to screen you for security purposes, as we have had many traitors bypassing our security and wreaking havoc in our community. Can I have some identification, please? The screener then obliged and handed over his identity card.
After briefly skimming through his documents, Gruegon thought something looked off.
"Sir, I will have to look for further identification from you, such as an identification number from our Department of Citizen Services.
Out of the blue, the fruglet threw his law enforcement attire off, revealing himself to be a member of the Tinki Tribe. "Behold, foolish one, I am Dine Tukai, member of the Tinkii Tribe and sworn enemy of you, the Pyra Tribe. I encourage you to follow my instructions and surrender control of this pond, or there will be severe consequences. While it seemed he would surrender for a second, we suddenly discovered that he had some jumping defense mechanisms to defend this security checkpoint and keep his fellow frogs safe.
Gruegon noticed something was changing. The other fruglets were looking at him in a certain heroic way. They were looking at him as a hero. No one had ever looked at him this way; internally, there was a mix of happiness and skepticism. Would they continue to look at this way as long as he lived, or was this just his fifteen minutes of fame?
He impressed everyone, including the other screeners, through his nearly invisible jumping, which caused Dine Tukai to nearly stumble over because he could not keep up with the moves, causing him to fall on his limbs multiple times. The apparent tactical moves Dine planned ahead of time could have worked better in his favor. "I cannot believe I am losing to this novice in battle," said Dine. "It is so embarrassing that I consider myself unworthy of the trust placed in me by me sakka tribe Tinki. I am a disappointment."
While running circles around Dine, Gruegon noticed something was changing. The other fruglets were looking at him in a certain heroic way. They were looking at him as a hero. No one had ever looked at him this way; internally, there was a mix of happiness and skepticism. Would they continue to look at this way as long as he lived, or was this just his fifteen minutes of fame?
Nevertheless, he persisted in his fight and ultimately came out on top. By the time the fight was over, law enforcement from the Department of Citizen Services came to arrest him and place him in custody underneath the pond where all the prisoners reside. However, something else had changed as well. He looked at himself differently. He believed at the time that he had as much stature as the ancient hero Triantheron, who was admired by all as the savior of all the fruglets.
Nevertheless, Gruegon was not the only hero in this world and the larger story. For that is a tale for another time.
