The First International Conference on “Evolving Prospects & Challenges in Indian Economy was held on the April 12, 2023 organized by the Department of Economics. Dr K Rajalakshmi, Department of Economics, CTTE College, welcomed the gathering.
Thiru. L. Palamalai IAS (Retd.), Managing Trustee & Correspondent, CTTE Trust addressed the audience by providing an insight to the current Economic Scenario, G20 and various issues in Indian Economy.
Prof. Dr S Sridevi, Principal, CTTE College for Women, motivated and encouraged the students and Faculty members to attend different conferences.
Dr K Jothi Sivgnanam Former Head & Professor, University of Madras, delivered the keynote address by detailing the current economic condition, GDP from sectors like Agriculture, Industry and Service Sector. He emphasised the significance of research contributions for overall development as well as to spread knowledge to others.
Dr Athira, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, proposed the vote of thanks.
The Conference Theme revolved around the following research areas: India as G20 Host, Gender & Regional Disparities in India, Agriculture and Agri-Business, Climate Change & Challenges of Sustainability, Rural Credit, Rural entrepreneurship and Inclusive Growth, Universal Health and Sanitation, Childhood Development, Education & Skill Development, & Transition to work Prospects of Agriculture - Food & Livelihood Security, Economic and Social Overheads, Economic Policies and Reforms, Digital Economy, Foreign Direct Investment, Dynamics of Fiscal Health, Social Security, Employment and Migration, COVID – 19 and its Impact on the Sectors, Women Empowerment, Gender Justice, Gender Pay Gap, Energy & Environmental Economics, Fiscal Policy and Public Debt, Money, Banking & Financial Markets, Business & Government, Public Policy & Political Economy.
The Conference sessions were followed by Special Lectures I, II and III in JJK Auditorium
Special Lecture I was on the topic ‘Evolving Prospects & Challenges in Indian Economy’ by Dr Sinnathurai Vijayakumar, Professor in Economics, University of Jaffna. He pointed out that India is the fastest growing county among the top five countries. By 2027, India will become the third largest country even though there is large regional disparity, poverty and other problems. He pointed out that GDP is rising in India and stated that there is a gender gap and income inequality in the manufacturing Industry. Dr Sinnathurai Vijayakumar opined that to increase the productivity the labourers should increase their skills, updated technology to be used. Unequal distribution of wealth, the underutilisation of the country's potentials and unemployment are the major challenges in India. He stated that there are favourable circumstances in India such as cheap cost of living, migration of people, technological development and also the Government efforts to improve the skills of students.
Special Lecture II was on the topic “Happiness economics” by Dr Brinda Viswanathan, Dean of Research & Professor in Economics, Madras School of Economics. The Session showcased the importance of the relationship between individual satisfaction and economic issues such as employment and wealth. Dr Brinda Viswanathan mentioned that a study can be conducted in and around the College about the relationship between individual satisfaction of the students and economic issues.
Special Lecture III was on the topic “Challenges in Indian Economy” by Dr K Malathi, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, University of Madras. She focused on the challenges in India like high unemployment, rising income inequality, a drop in aggregate demand, population growth and rate of capital formation.
In all 67 authors registered from all over the country, out of which 8 presented their papers through online mode, others presented their paper physically.
The authors answered queries by the experts. Each sessions' best papers were selected by the respective chairs as follows:
Participants shared their feedback, expressing their excitement in the learning they received, the hospitality and infrastructure provided by the College.

The Department of Economics arranged for the students to watch the Live Telecast of Tamil Nadu Budget Presentation on March 20, 2023. The programme was organized for the students of all the Departments.
One of the key announcements of the Tamil Nadu State Budget was Rs. 1000/- assistance for women family heads, free travel for women in state run buses, breakfast scheme for government school students.
Dr. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan announced setting up of the Art Global Sports city in Chennai.
The Finance Minister announced renovation of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at an estimated cost of Rs 25 Crores.
He announced that in the forthcoming financial year, the State Government would construct Classrooms, Laboratories and toilets at a cost of Rs 1500 Crores.
The Finance Minister announced that the Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam Scheme will be implemented at a cost of Rs. 1000 crore over the next three years to address the gaps in development and infrastructure deficit of North Chennai.
Dr. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan also announced that the government will launch Annal Ambedkar Business Champions Scheme to provide 35% capital subsidy and offer a 6% interest subsidy for loans to procure machinery and equipment to SC/ST entrepreneurs, Rs 100 crore have been allocated for this scheme.
More than 400 students watched the telecast with interest. The telecast arrangement in College received favorable reviews from the student body.

Union Budget’23
The Department of Economics arranged ‘Highlights Union Budget’ Screening on March 16, 2023. The programme was organised for all the first year students of the Commerce stream. The government through the Budget 2022-23 has envisioned laying a strong foundation to steer the Indian economy towards Amrit Kaal.
Amrit Kaal is the term coined by the government to mark the 25-year period till 2047 when India will celebrate 100 years of Independence.
The Union Finance Minister listed seven key priorities which would complement each other and act as the “Saptarishi” guiding the government towards the Amrit Kaal. They include:

The Department of Economics in association with Scientific Research Association for Economics and Finance is conducting ‘Know your Economy - Awareness Kindling Test’ every year for all Commerce students who have studied Indian Economy as their main or elective paper.
Scientific Research Association for Economics and Finance is a part of Palkhiwala Foundation, conducting competitions for colleges throughout India. The first three toppers in the country will receive a cash prize of Rs.5000/-, Rs. 3000/- and Rs. 2000/- respectively. A Cash award of Rs. 1,000/- is given for the College Topper, and for the department topper Rs. 500/- is given. Certificates were given to all participants.
For the academic year 2022 – 2023, ‘Know your Economy - Awareness Kindling Test’ was conducted on the 4th Maech 2023. Totally 256 students from B.Com (General, Corporate Secretaryship, and Accounting & Finance) and BBA enrolled for the test, out of which 205 students took the test.
The following students brought laurels to our institution and the Department by winning prizes.

The Department of Economics inaugurated the ECONLOG club on 17/10/2022 commemorating the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and conducted interdepartmental competitions
The club for Economics, ECONLOG was formally inaugurated by the faculty coordinator of the Department Dr. K. Rajalakshmi. ECON denotes Economics and LOG denotes Logs of Wood cut from different trees. ECON + LOG come together to help the students from different branches to understand the significance of Economics in day to day life.
The competitions were grouped into PPT, Skit, Debate, Connection and Quiz on the theme, Eradication of Poverty and were simultaneously held.

In this program conducted by the Department of Economics, the resource person highlighted the gender inequality and how women were treated differently compared to men. She spoke on the problems faced by women in a patriarchal society. The resource person discussed in detail the causes for gender inequality throwing light on the economic growth in gender inequality.
She spoke briefly on the economic dimensions of gender inequality in India like labour force participation, patriarchal system and the role of the government in gender inequality, its rights and responsibilities. She concluded by saying that gender inequality will get us nowhere and that we need to get rid of the age old traditions and customs. On August 5, a Special Lecture was organised by the Department of Economics to know more about GST and the topic of the lecture was GST: Since 2017- An Evaluation. The Resource person was Dr. K. Jothi Sivagnanam (Former Head & Professor, Department of Economics, University of Madras).
Dr. K. Jothi Sivagnanam enlightened the students with his knowledge on GST and explained that GST is the destination based tax. He also added that in India, the Service sector contributes 2/3rd of our country's GDP. Before GST, the Union Government levied 8 taxes and the state Government levied 9 taxes and the sum of 17 taxes was levied on the single tax based on income. Now they are all combined in the name of one tax that is GST (Goods and Services Tax)
The Department of Commerce (General, Accounting and finance, Corporate Secretaryship) and the Business Administration students were the audience for the lecture.
