Simulation Club
Founded in 1986 by General Education Department Head Emeritus John Haskell, to promote table top gaming. As we in the Simulation Club have found, if you don’t teach new players how to play the game, you won’t have anyone to game against. Mr. Carter transferred to H H Ellis Technical High School in January of 2011, and quickly joined Simulation Club as co-advisor, until Mr. Haskell's retirement in June of 2012. Mr. Carter has been the advisor ever since, teaming up with other teachers to suit the needs of the club. The club is very fortunate to have many friends in the local community who have added to the clubs gaming experiences.
We are a board game club that plays games that simulate historical battles, economical issues, theoretical and fictional games of strategy. There are no video games. Unsportsmanlike conduct is not be tolerated. In our club the word cheat is a four letter word.
Gaming across a table from your opponent or team mates can promote higher ordered thinking, logical and outside the box thinking, good sportsmanship, social interaction, and team work.
EllisCon
Founded in 1990, this is the regions premier single day game conference, typically held the weekend after Veterans Day, in mid-November. It is the clubs only fundraiser. Attendance has been steadily growing over the years, and is currently at about 300 people in attendance. Highlights of the day are the great dioramic table top games hosted by Battle Group Boston South, the Retro Video Game Lounge, Magic The Gathering, Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures, Warhammer 40K, and the end of the day Game Auction, hosted by advisor emeritus, John Haskell.
Family Game Night
Founded in 2014, the Simulation Club, Family Engagement Team and Parent Faculty Organization host a game night for Ellis Tech students and their families. This also includes alumni, community members and prospective students. Typically held on a Friday night at the end of April, it runs from 5-8. Food and refreshment is provided, there are door prizes, and there is no cost for this screen free evening. The goal is to promote family togetherness, and enjoy gaming fellowship with each other.
In 2014, Ellis Tech was recognized by John Hopkins University for this event. It’s a major award.
The Patch
The logo was designed by one of our first presidents, Trevor Aubin. The three hexes represent the design superimposed on the maps of simulations to facilitate movement of pieces. Mr. Haskell suggested the playing pieces reflect those from a regular game, Afrika Korps. Produced by Avalon Hill, Afrika Korps is a game recreating the see-saw battle led by German General Erwin Rommel against the British in North Africa during World War II. The small boxes use universal military symbols to designate the type of unit: an “X” for infantry, oval for armor, and oval & “X” for armored infantry. The red and blue indicate the colors used in military gaming: “red” for opposing forces. Each piece has three numbers to indicate attack strength, defense strength and movement. In this case the weak British infantry unit being rolled over by the mobile German units. The logo was put together by the drafting shops.
The Shirts
Simulation Club members can purchase from the club a tie dyed shirt in white and blue for special events and trips. Students can wear these in place of their academic uniform shirts on club days. These shirts promote the club while making the club members easy to identify in a crowded room at events and on trips.
