Softball Coaching Announcement - Cheney Tech Athletics is proud to announce the hiring of Sean Sweeney as the next Head Coach of the Chargers Softball Program.
Coach Sweeney is a valued member of the Cheney Tech community, serving as a Social Studies teacher within the school. In addition to his work in the classroom, he brings years of softball coaching experience throughout the local area and has developed a strong reputation for teaching the game, building positive team cultures, and helping student-athletes reach their potential both on and off the field.
"We are excited to welcome Coach Sweeney into this leadership role," said the Athletic Director Adam Starvish. "His passion for education, commitment to student success, and extensive softball background make him an outstanding choice to lead our program."
Coach Sweeney takes over a program that continues to grow and compete with pride, and he is eager to begin working with returning players and future Chargers as preparations begin for the upcoming season.

Softball Coaching Announcement - After five years of leading the Cheney Tech Softball program, Coach Lyle Montanye has submitted his resignation as Head Softball Coach.
During his tenure, Coach Montanye worked tirelessly to support and develop our student-athletes while helping to build a positive and competitive softball program. His dedication extended beyond the softball field, as he consistently represented Cheney Tech Athletics with professionalism and pride.
We are grateful for Coach Montanye's commitment to our athletes, our softball program, and the entire Cheney Tech school community. His efforts have had a lasting impact on countless student-athletes, and we sincerely appreciate all that he has done during his time as head coach.

UPDATE June 9th 2026
State Champions - This spring was one of the most successful seasons in Cheney Tech Athletics history as we earned our first three State Championships as Cheney Tech!
Our Esports program captured two State Championships, while Kimari Eady won the Class MM State Championship in the 100-meter dash. These remarkable accomplishments are a testament to the dedication, hard work, and talent of our student-athletes and coaches.
For additional details and photos, please visit the State Championships section of our website.
Championship Banners - It has been more than seven years since the championship banners in our gymnasium were updated. I am pleased to announce that new banners have been ordered and are expected to be installed for the 2026-27 school year.
The new display will replace outdated banners and include:
Updated championship banners
A new 1,000-Point Scorer banner
State Championship banners honoring our championship teams and athletes
We are also exploring the creation of banners recognizing all Cheney Tech All-State athletes. Obtaining historical information from the CHSCA has been a slow process, but we remain committed to this project.
In the meantime:
Our 2025-26 All-State athletes are recognized on a banner located outside the gymnasium.
Our Digital Media students have created individual banners honoring our recent State Champions, which are currently displayed outside the gym.
Cheney Tech Athletics Hall of Fame - The Cheney Tech Alumni Association has established the Cheney Tech Athletics Hall of Fame.
Located on the wall opposite the gymnasium, the Hall of Fame features a beautiful graphic display and recognizes its inaugural class through six commemorative plaques detailing each inductee's accomplishments while attending Cheney Tech.
This has been an outstanding addition to our school community, and many students have already spent time learning about the rich history of Cheney Tech Athletics.
In the future, I will add a dedicated Hall of Fame webpage featuring photographs and information about each inductee. Until then, I encourage everyone to stop by and view the display in person.
New Head Coaches for Fall 2026 - I am pleased to announce the hiring of Sean Donnelly as our new Boys Soccer Head Coach and John Jordan as our new Girls Volleyball Head Coach.
Both coaches bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to their programs and have extensive coaching backgrounds at Cheney Tech. Their photos and contact information have been updated in the Our Coaching Staff section of our website.
Exploring Co-op in Ice Hockey for 26-27- I am excited to share that Cheney Tech is exploring the opportunity to join the Tri-Town Hockey co-op program beginning in the 2026-27 school year.
Ellington High School has agreed to add Cheney Tech to its existing hockey co-op and will submit the necessary application to the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference this fall.
If approved, this would mark the first ice hockey co-op in Cheney Tech history.
We have pursued similar opportunities in the past, but previous applications were not approved by the CIAC for various reasons. We are optimistic about this proposal and will provide updates as soon as the application process is completed and a decision is announced.
