The key element that is paramount to thinking through and connecting the stages is making meaning. Overshadowed as we debate essential questions, transfer goals, and which understandings are relevant for a course, meaning is the connective tissue that makes this process relevant. Making meaning requires inquiry, problem solving, and questioning – from the student. Authenticity of tasks and learning contexts help students make meaning, and thereby allow them to create the connections needed to transfer knowledge.
