Bayard Rustin was a key civil rights leader and close advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who helped introduce nonviolence as the foundation of the movement. Jesse Jackson passed away just this past Tuesday, February 17th. For more than 60 years, Reverend Jackson helped lead some of the most significant movements for change in human history. “Any time, any time while I was a slave, if one minute’s freedom had been offered to me, and I had been told I must die at the end of that minute, I would have taken it, just to stand one minute on god’s [earth] airth a free woman–I would.”

Elizabeth “Mumbet” Freeman (ca. 1744–1829) was one of the first Black women to win her freedom in Massachusetts after successfully suing for it in 1781. Using the state’s new constitution, she argued that slavery violated the principle that “all men are born free and equal,” helping pave the way for slavery to be outlawed in Massachusetts.

Good morning, Vinal Tech! Today kicks off our celebration of Black History Month 2026. The event was the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

The theme we’ve chosen this year is “Black History in Every Trade, Every Tool, Every Talent — Vinal Tech.” This morning, we’ll kick off our celebration with an advisory activity that looks into some of the figures that have had an impact on your specific trade. Staff members can also join by purchasing a beaded necklace for $1, which students may challenge as well. At the end of the event, the participant with the most bracelets and necklaces wins!
