Shop Rules, Regulations & Grading

J.M. WRIGHT TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL

CARPENTRY DEPARTMENT

Dear parents or guardian of students in grades 9, 10, 11 & 12,

This letter is to welcome you to (or back to) the Carpentry Shop Please find your copy of the Carpentry shop Course Description, Shop Rules and Regulations, Tool Policy, Detention Policy, Uniforms Policy, Grading Policy, and Tool List. Please review all material with your student. Job safety and work ethics are paramount. The outside production and in school plant maintenance will begin the transition to the world of work. This is real work. People will sleep in the homes and work in the buildings we work on. It requires the highest amount of responsibility for each member of the class. This work will be in addition to trade competency, stress safety, discipline, responsibility, self-pride, maturity, and teamwork.

To achieve these goals the student will need to meet our shop standards. These requirements are essential in the Carpentry trade to obtain and keep a job as an apprentice and ultimately as a journeyperson and contractor. These standards come from employer’s recommendations and expectations. All students are reminded that they should report to SHOP on day one in uniform and have all their tools and supplies with them.

A reminder about Production - all students must come to school each day prepared to go out on production (or in school production), which includes proper school uniform and outerwear (ex. hot, cold, or rainy weather) & prepared lunch or money to purchase a school lunch.

If you have any questions, please contact us at above phone number, between the hours of 7:30am – 3:00pm, or leave us a message on the voicemail and we will return your call.

PRIDE: In Ourselves – In Our Shop – In Our Work

COURSE DESCRIPTION •

The Carpentry PROGRAM at J.M. WRIGHT TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL is a four-year high school program, in which Residential, Commercial, and Industrial applications are studied. The National Building Code is studied and contemporary building methods and techniques are practiced. Actual Building and remodeling are done by the students. Students will become knowledgeable about the state licenses available to them on completion of their apprenticeship.

10th through 12th grades will be heavily involved in actual production work both inside and outside of the school.

The Work Based Learning (WBL) experience program will be emphasized with the intention that all students wanting a Carpentry job will be employed in the carpentry field by their senior year.

The students will be expected to master the skills of a first year apprentice. They will practice and master skills needed to secure employment in the Carpentry field and learn how to interact effectively with customers, employers, and employees. Students will have the ability to complete a material list and explain in detail to the customer both orally and in writing the job to be completed.

TRADE ADVANTAGES •

Working conditions are very good, but advancement will depend on the individual seeking specialty training. This program will allow the student the ability to pursue ownership of his/her own business when he/she acquires the proper license.

JOB OUTLOOK

The future looks excellent for Carpenter and apprentices. The last survey compiled by the Connecticut Department of Labor ranked the Carpenter trade as the number 1 occupational trade,

PLACEMENT •

The goals and objectives of our program center on preparing quality students for employment. We will make every effort to place students in the Carpentry field before graduation. We will also encourage our students to pursue higher education and will make every effort to assist them in this endeavor.

CARPENTRY TECHNOLOGY

PRIDE: In Ourselves – In Our Shop – In Our Work

• Policy on Tools and Knifes •

We instruct our students right from the beginning of the Two Day Exploratory Cycle, again in the Four Day, again when they pick the shop, and in 10th, 11th, & 12th grade.

We explain that no tools or knives are to leave the shop when the students go to lunch, ancillaries, or academics. We instruct them that the only time tools can leave the shop is when they are doing production work around the school. We explain to them, if they are caught with a tool or a knife in lunch, an ancillary, or in academics they could be suspended.

We instruct the students that if any of them use a tool improperly, disciplinary action will be taken.

The students are instructed that they are only allowed to have a shop-approved knife. We tell them it has to be a UTILITY knife and if they were not sure to check with us.

Students are responsible for the tools and personal belongings.

Students will we required to engrave all their tools and personal belongings that are required for the Carpentry shop.

Students must provide a locking lock for their toolbox. And for their lockers.
