Introduction to Research (ITR) is a one- credit required course in which students are guided through the process of developing an unanswered research question in a STEM field that interests them and designing an experiment to address that question. Students will learn how to find and interpret research literature, develop a research hypothesis, and design an experiment using the scientific method. They will also be introduced to various skills and techniques, lab procedures, and instrumentation to help them gain confidence and competency in the lab. Finally, they will learn how to collect and analyze data.
At the conclusion of the course, all students will submit a formal research proposal outlining their plan for independent research in their sophomore year. Throughout this course, students develop problem-solving, decision-making and inquiry skills. The course also focuses on developing communication skills as well as time management, organization, decision making, resource allocation, scientific ethics, and lab safety.
