This first semester course will introduce the basic fundamentals of shop safety, hand tools and power tools. The focus of this course includes measurement, safety, basic woodworking, and shop projects.
Shop/Classroom Rules:
Safety – Students will follow all general shop safety rules and specific safety rules for working with hand and power tools.
Promptness & Preparation – Students will come to class on time and prepared for class. This means that they should have something to write with and any assignments or projects that they will be working on in class.
Work Ethic – Students will demonstrate a good work ethic. This means that the students will follow the directions given for completing tasks, ask questions or seek assistance when necessary, and seek out directions for new activities when they have finished the current activity.
Respect for Others – Students will work cooperatively and respectfully with one another and with the teacher. Additionally, students will respect one another’s personal space.
Respect for Shop – Students will respect the shop space and the tools in the shop. This means that the students will clean up the shop as they are working and at the end of each shop period. Additionally, the students will only use tools that they have been qualified on and will use those tools in the appropriate manner.
Class Information:
Information about the day-to-day operation of the class can be found on the class website. There is a link to the class website.
Behavior Problems:
If a student does not follow the shop/classroom or school rules, the students will be given a verbal and/or written reminder of the rules and asked to refrain from inappropriate behavior. If the behavior continues, the student will be required to spend all or a portion of their lunch period with the teacher working on ways to improve their behavior. If the inappropriate behaviors persist, the student’s parents will be contacted and the student may be referred to administration. In the event of a serious infraction, the student will be immediately referred to administration and parental contact will be made.
Missed Classes:
If a student misses class, he/she should see the teacher as soon as possible to determine what work has been missed and determine a schedule for making up the work and/or shop time. Students will have five days to complete and turn in make-up work and have the work considered on time. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements to make-up work and obtain notes or assignments that were missed.
Missing Class for School Activities:
If a student is going to miss class for a school activity (field trip, band lesson, etc.), the student must see the teacher before missing class. The student will be responsible for getting any assignments that will be missed and making arrangements to make up the missed assignments and/or shop time.
Shop Safety:
Students will be required to follow all directions (verbal and written) given for shop work. Students will be given direct instruction in general shop safety and on specific tools. Students will be tested on general shop safety and on specific tools. Students will only be permitted to use the tools for which he/she has earned a perfect score on the safety portion of the tool’s test. Additionally, students will be required to follow all general shop safety rules and tool-specific rules. Any safety violations will result in the student being retrained in the applicable safety rules. Repeated or deliberate violations of safety rules will result in a loss of shop privileges. Parents will be contacted if this is the case.
Quizzes and Tests:
All quizzes and tests will be announced. Many of the tests and quizzes will have a hands-on portion. All hands-on test portions will be graded with a rubric. There will be a review before all quizzes and tests.
Projects:
Students will be completing multiple projects over the course of the semester. Students will have the opportunity to select some of the projects that they will be completing. The students will be required to pay for the materials used in all of their projects. The school district will give the students a discounted rate on the materials for these projects. If paying for the project will pose a financial hardship, please inform the teacher of this when the student brings home the Bill of Materials for review. All projects will be graded using a rubric that students will receive before beginning the project. Projects must be turned in by the due date. Projects that are submitted late will receive partial credit.
Homework:
Homework will rarely be assigned. However, when homework is assigned, it is to be completed and ready to be reviewed and discussed at the beginning of class on the day that it is due.
Grades:
Student grades will be based on the following items:
Weekly Effort Grade: This participation grade will be determined using the Weekly Shop Effort Rubric.
Weekly Bell Ringer Sheets: Bell ringer sheets will include the daily bell ringer, daily exit question, and weekly safety question.
Project Completion Grade: Students will earn points for each project they complete. Students will earn full credit for completing the project.
Project Evaluation Grade: Student projects will be graded based on the rubric for the project. Students will receive the project rubric at the beginning of the project.
Assignments: Students will occasionally be given graded assignments (online or print). Students will be informed when the assignment is given that it is a graded assignment.
The student’s course grade will be determined based on points. The total number of points earned by the student will be divided by the total number of points possible for the marking period to determine the student’s grade. Grades can be accessed using the Parent Portal website. If a student or parent does not have access to grades on the website, please contact me. Grade reports can be provided to parents who do not have access to the internet upon request.
