Insects are among the most abundant and diverse organisms on earth. The majority of insects maintain associations with beneficial microbes that make up their microbiomes. I study the various ways that microbes benefit their insects hosts.
Underground environments harbor great microbial diversity. Environmental stress such as pollution and contamination can alter the diversity of microbial communities. Studying how microbes survive and even break down chemicals in contaminated soils and groundwater can help us develop new technologies for remediation of polluted environments.
I am interested in how research experiences in college laboratory courses promote learning and improve student outcomes.
