Marylou Shockley, P.h.D., Interim Dean
As my tenure as Interim Dean of the College of Business comes to a close, I look back with deep pride and sincere gratitude. Over the past four years—and throughout my many years serving as department chair—I’ve had the honor of working alongside an extraordinary community of faculty, staff, students, and partners.
This year, we reached several important milestones. Our initial Self-Evaluation Report (iSER) was accepted by AACSB, advancing us to the next phase of accreditation.
We also prepared for the launch of two new degree programs in Fall 2025: the B.S. in Accounting and the B.S. in Agribusiness and Supply Chain Management. These programs will expand career pathways for our students and meet regional workforce needs.
Through events like the 23rd annual Ethics and Responsible Business Forum, the Ag Jobs Showcase, and the College of Business Showcase, we created meaningful experiences for students to connect with industry and develop leadership skills. The Ethics Forum, in particular, reflected our core values by exploring the theme “Reclaiming Our Values” in partnership with our new Responsible Business Innovation Lab and iiED.
I’m deeply grateful to our faculty for their dedication to teaching, scholarship, and student success. That same spirit is embodied by our students, including this year’s Dean’s Medalist, Sarah Walter, whose achievements exemplify the strength of our Otter Raft.
As I pass the baton, I’m delighted to welcome Dr. Suzanne Zivnuska as our new dean, as of August 2025. With her experience and values, I know she will lead the College into an exciting next chapter.
Finally, I want to thank all of you for your support. Your kind retirement wishes have meant so much to me. As I step into retirement, I’m also proud to leave a legacy that includes three awards made possible by my family: the Marylou L. Shockley Faculty Fellowship, the Davis-Froshman-Shockley Lecturer Faculty Fellowship, and the Callie Chastain Distinguished Staff Award. These recognitions are dedicated to the exceptional faculty and staff across our university who make a lasting impact through service, mentorship, and excellence.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of this incredible journey. The future is bright for the College of Business, and I look forward to seeing all the great things yet to come.
With gratitude,
Dr. Marylou Shockley, Ph.D.

Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) and Pebble Beach Company launched the Pebble Beach Scholars program, a $1.4 million initiative aimed at supporting students in CSUMB’s Sustainable Hospitality Management program. The program provides scholarships, paid internships at Pebble Beach Resorts, housing during academic breaks, and job placement support. Eight students began the program this fall, gaining hands-on experience at a world-class resort. Leaders at CSUMB and Pebble Beach see this as a model for future partnerships that enhance student success and career readiness, especially for first-generation college students.
Sarah Walter transferred from Cosumnes River College and quickly became a campus leader. She served as president of Theta Alpha Sigma and the Accounting Society, and as secretary of the Otter Student Union Board. Walter also volunteered at the Monterey County Rape Crisis Center. Her academic interests were sparked by a mock accounting class during Admitted Otter Day, leading her to pursue a career in auditing. She plans to intern at Moss Adams in Sacramento and prepare for the CPA exams. Walter credits professors Gary Schneider, Shaowen Hua, and Heiko Wieland for their support.
