In collaboration with the Technology and Learning Program, Faculty Development offered a QLT Canvas fully online, asynchronous training in Fall 2024 and Spring 2025, and 10 faculty completed the training and course review. The QA Lead at the time of its creation designed the QLT training in Canvas in collaboration with the Technology and Learning Program and three faculty facilitators.

For 2024-2025, the QA program at Chico State had three major goals:
GOAL 1: CONTINUE IMPLEMENTATION OF QLT IN CANVAS AND RUN ASSESSMENT OF FACULTY PERFORMANCE
Fall 2023 marked our transition to Canvas as a campus. After a successful pilot in spring 2023, we continued with an online asynchronous Canvas course. This year we continued to increase accountability, but with mixed results. Completion increased again in spring 2024 which indicates persistence and planning are the key components of accountability in this work. We were not able to complete an assessment of faculty performance
GOAL 2: EMBEDDING QLT IN A NEW FACULTY DEVELOPMENT TEACHING CERTIFICATE UTILIZING CANVAS CREDENTIALS
We launched the online teaching certificate in winter 2025. This features work from our teaching guides and a sequence of modules. Many themes of QLT are incorporated throughout the certificate. We have had dozens of faculty enroll in the certificate and completions have started coming in. This was a goal we met.
GOAL 3: PARTNER STRATEGICALLY WITH DEPARTMENTS OFFERING ONLINE PROGRAMS TO OFFER TAILORED QLT TRAINING IN CANVAS
This continues to be an aspiration and is reflected in our goals for next year. We spoke with several departments/programs we thought would be a good fit, but could not finalize a partnership.
Faculty Development has offered the QLT course as a fully online asynchronous format delivered in Canvas as of fall 2023 following a successful pilot in spring 2023. The course was designed in collaboration with the Academic Technology Officer, Information Technology Consultants, and two faculty members.
In spring 2025, based on lower completion results from fall 2025, we added more synchronicity by scheduling one module per week with weekly reminders sent by Canvas Announcement in order to create opportunities for more robust and timely discussion among participants, increase support from peers and module facilitators, and create a productive sense of urgency.
Each weekly announcement reminded faculty of the module and assignments due, the topics for that week, and the topics for the following week. Some announcements included strategic Canvas tips applicable to both the QLT participants and their students. For example, an early announcement included a Canvas tip describing how to sync the Canvas calendar to their Outlook or Google Calendar.
Summer 2022: the QA lead started mapping an outline for the asynchronous QLT course, with the goal of implementing and expanding elements from the 5 synchronous workshops.
Fall 2022: The QA Lead collaborated with the Academic Technology Officer to finalize the outline for the asynchronous Canvas course. While the outline originally included 7 modules, the finalized courses ended up including 8 (shown below).
January 2023: The QA completed the design of the QLT Canvas course, with input from the Academic Technology Officer, TLP technology consultants, and two faculty facilitators. The course launched in late January 2023.
Fall 2023: All QLT participants now complete the online asynchronous course in Canvas with the support of module facilitators composed of the QA Lead, TLP technology consultants, and two faculty facilitators.
Spring 2024: The QLT Lead adds optional synchronous Zoom meetings to support participants in meeting benchmarks. The module facilitators also attend the meetings corresponding to their modules to contribute to the discussion and answer questions.
Spring 2025: The QLT Lead modifies modules and their corresponding assignments to add more synchronicity with weekly due dates for more consistency and to encourage higher completion rates.
Canvas QLT Course Navigation Video
Module 1: Introduction to QLT (Video)
A final survey was administered December 2024 and May 2025 among the faculty who completed the QLT Canvas course in fall 2024 or spring 2025, respectively. Five of the ten faculty responded to the to the final survey.
The main takeaways from the survey are included below:
On average, faculty stated it took 3-4 hours to complete each module.
Faculty appreciated the many resources provided in the QLT course and stated they found all topics relevant and useful. There was a variety of topics mentioned as particularly useful with each participant mentioning different ones: accessibility features in Canvas, Student Learning Objectives, meaningful assignments and evaluations, and course navigation.
Three of the five faculty thought QLT took about the same amount of work as they expected while two thought it was a bit more.
Faculty commented that it was very clear which QLT standards were being met each week, the order was logical, and that it did not seem like there was any "clutter" in the course. One mentioned that they were successfully convinced through completing the course of the value and flexibility of using the QLT rubric for courses of any modality (whereas initially they thought the standards seemed more applicable to virtual learning).
Canvas QLT Course Survey
GOAL 1: CONTINUE TO IMPROVE ACCOUNTABILITY MECHANISMS TO IMPROVE MEANINGFUL COMPLETION RATES OF THE COURSE
Activities will include scripted outreach throughout the semester to faculty members possibly also working with Department Chairs.
GOAL 2: PURSUE A PROGRAM ORIENTED ENROLLMENT APPROACH
Work with Department Chairs and/or Deans to idnetify 1-2 programs of study where all of the faculty can be involved in one QLT cohort. This will increase the coherence of the program and strengthen the cohort.
GOAL 3: INCORPORATE AI LITERACY SEGMENTS INTO QLT
AI literacy, especially for courses taught primarily online is critical. Activities will include borrowing segments from the AI retrofit for incorporation into QLT training.
