This course provides a "farm work experience" for students in the College of Agriculture. You will submit an application for your desired livestock unit at the farm. Students can apply through for the ANSC 110 course using the application on this website. The application will have some basic contact/demographic information, require a student resume, short questions about your career goals, and how this experience will support your career goals. Farm livestock managers will reach out to you for screening, interviews, and enrollment in the course for the semester. You can find an overview of each unit and manager contact information on our university farm website.
Livestock units include:
Beef Unit
Sheep Unit
Swine Unit
Organic Dairy Unit
Meats Lab
While each unit offers a unique experience, the following elements are shared across all units:
Students will meet with Kate Moore at the university farm for training and paperwork (Week 1 & 2).
Students will work 5-6 hours weekly (minimum 80 hours per semester for credit).
Hours must be tracked via timesheets at each unit and submitted weekly on Canvas; failure to submit may affect grades.
Work may involve independent tasks, group workdays, or planned activities, with some units requiring additional hours based on shift structure.
At semester’s end, students will undergo an evaluation with faculty/staff supervisors to receive feedback for professional growth.
Students must submit their applications by the deadlines below to be eligible for enrollment in ANSC 110.
Fall Semesters: December 1st
Spring Semesters: May 1st
The application for the College of Agriculture’s directed work course (ANSC 110) includes:
Basic contact information.
Acknowledgment of course expectations.
Confirmation of a valid driver’s license (required for some units).
Complete 3-4 essay questions on career goals, how the chosen unit supports your goals, livestock/meats experience, strengths you bring, and skills you wish to develop.
Upload a resume in PDF format.
