"Ujamaa in Action: Teach, Inspire, and Unite Your Community!"
The Black Educator Teacher Residency (BETR) program embodies the tenets of Ujamaa by focusing on collective resources, mentorship networks, culturally relevant curriculum, collaboration, and feedback. BETR pools resources from participating districts and schools to create shared professional development opportunities. It fosters a strong network of experienced educators providing mentorship that emphasizes culturally responsive teaching practices and helps residents navigate professional challenges.
The curriculum and training reflect the cultural backgrounds and experiences of the communities served, promoting a deeper understanding of students' needs and fostering a sense of belonging. BETR encourages collaboration among residents, mentor teachers, and community members, creating opportunities for joint projects that benefit the community and instill a spirit of shared responsibility. Regular feedback loops allow residents to share experiences and insights, promoting continuous improvement and cultivating a culture of learning and mutual aid.
The Black Educator Teacher Residency (BETR) provides over 900 hours of hands-on training, significantly more than the 600 hours typical in traditional teacher preparation programs.
