Selena Quintanilla y Los Dinos created music called, Tejano music, or Texas-Mexico music. Tejano music is very popular near the Texas-Mexico border, which is a large reason why Selena was able to get involved, as she is a Mexican American living in Texas. Tejano music is a combination of a lot of different genres of music, including German pokas, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Mexican rancheras, cumbias, and mainstream American pop, hip hop, and western county influences. When it came to the songs that Selena wrote, she focused a lot on the theme of love, which is a theme that seems a lot in these genres. Within Tejano music, there are also Mariachi ballads mixed with love pop (Paredez, 2009). Selena became known as the Tex-Mex Madonna due to her increasing popularity for her music and fashion. Although Selena was born in the United States, she was still wanting to be connected with both cultures. That being said, she produced music in both English and Spanish within the Tejano genre. Using both her lyrics and performance, Selena was able to connect with her audience with a passion for her work. Many describe her performances as super entertaining and energetic. Meanwhile, her lyrics are relatable (or not) to her audience when it comes to love and relationships.Â
