Research demonstrates that English learners (ELs) fare better when they have opportunities to engage with rigorous academic content (e.g., AP CS Principles). Such engagement requires that teachers attend to disciplinary language and literacy practices, understand that language and STEM/CS are reciprocal and interrelated endeavors, and engage ELs’ funds of knowledge and linguistic practices to facilitate language and STEM/CS learning.
This project will develop system, school, and teacher capacity to improve AP CS Principles access and success for students currently and formerly designated as English Learners (ELs). Outcomes include:
Increased enrollment in AP CSP among ELs
Increased engagement and grades in AP CSP for ELs
Increased achievement on the AP CSP exam for ELs
Increased language proficiency for ELs
