The writers from the Northland community listed below have kindly offered their time and talents to lead student breakout sessions before and after lunch.
Linda LeGarde Grover is a member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and professor emeritus of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She is author of award-winning works that include the essay collection Onigamiising: Seasons of an Ojibwe Year, mixed-genre memoir Gichigami Hearts: Stories and Histories of Misaabekong, fiction The Dance Boots, The Road Back to Sweetgrass, and In the Night of Memory, and newly expanded and revised poetry collection The Sky Watched: Poems of Ojibwe Lives. Her research focuses upon the effects of the American Indian Boarding school system on Native individuals, families and communities. Linda lives in Onigamiising (Duluth), where she was born.
Sheila Packa is a poet and writer. She has taught creative writing and composition at Lake Superior College and she also leads poetry and creative writing workshops in community settings. She received a 2020 MSAB Arts Initiative Award for Poetry, a fellowship from the Finlandia Foundation in 2014, two Loft McKnight Awards (in poetry and in prose) a Loft Mentor Award, and fellowships and grants from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council. She has four books of poetry and edited the book Migrations: Poetry & Prose for Life’s Transitions, an anthology of Lake Superior writers. She served as Duluth’s Poet Laureate in 2010-2012. Her latest book of poetry, Surface Displacements, is a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award 2023.
Ellie Schoenfeld is the author of three collections of poetry including The Dark Honey: New & Used Poems (Clover Valley Press, 2009). Her work has appeared in an assortment of anthologies, small press journals, and on The Writer’s Almanac. She was a co-founder of Poetry Harbor and served on the board of Spirit Lake Poetry Series. She has participated in many projects working with artists from various genres and worked with regional literary organizations on community poetry projects. She has been the grateful recipient of ARAC/McKnight fellowship grants and served as the 2016-2018 Duluth Poet Laureate.
Nick Trelstad is a poet and English teacher from northern Minnesota. He is the author of a poetry collection titled “A Threshold We Carry,” which is currently a nominee for the 2022 Eric Hoffer Award. His poems have also been published in various literary magazines and anthologies, such as: Dillydoun Review, Scriblerus Review, The Santa Clara Review, among others. His works also appeared in the anthology Bringing Joy: A Local Literary Welcome, which won the Minnesota Author Project Award 2022.
