At the beginning of the round, students draw a question about current events. They are given 30 minutes to research, compose, and memorize a maximum 7-minute speech that answers the question. There are four main categories that the questions are from: domestic politics, foreign affairs, economics, and social and legal issues. "Extempers" are allowed to connect to the internet and use articles from online as sources. At the end of the 30 minute prep period, students perform their speech before a judge, citing sources as they substantiate their answer to the question. Grades 9/10 are JV, 11/12 are Varsity. JV Extemp is allowed to use an index card with 50 words or less.
