New Britain High School Art
Students who pursue art at the high school level, elect to study from a variety of art courses. Classes meet on a block rotation every other day. Basic foundational skills and broad experiences are offered in entry-level courses. Students who wish to pursue a college and/or career path in art are encouraged to develop portfolios that demonstrate their mastery of skills in a particular media and processes, as well as their personal style and individual artistic voice. High school art teachers are experts in one or more media, and support students in their artistic pursuits through individualized instruction and assessments. Currently, to accommodate students’ individual needs, teachers may offer opportunity for students to extend learning through writing independent study contracts. We currently offer advanced courses in 2D, 3D and digital areas and AP studio art class. AP studio is offered for full year, in three different studio strands: Drawing, 2D Design and 3D Design.
903: Art Appreciation
Standard 1/2 Credit
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
This semester course is new and is available for all students generally interested in art but not focused on pursuing any higher level art courses. Students will gain an appreciation and broad understanding of the foundational elements of art, art history and art criticism with minimal exposure to art materials and media.
903: Art Appreciation This semester course is for students who do not want to pursue any other art courses. Students will gain an understanding of how they can utilize the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to explore the world of art. Various themes, artist styles, and movements will be discussed. Students will analyze visual communication and artistic themes, ideas, and feelings through art analysis and art making.
902: Intro to Art Pathway

902: Into to Art Pathway is the prerequisite for all upper-level art classes. It is for students interested in an artistic experience as part of their course of study. Students will gain an understanding of how they can utilize the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to find their creative voice. Various themes, artist styles, and movements will be discussed and students will be able to discover their own individual styles while experimenting with a wide range of subjects and media. Students will utilize their own style to communicate their themes, ideas, and feelings through art-making to visually communicate. A sketchbook is required for this class. Journal keeping is an important part of the course.
773 Unified Art Standard 1/2 Credit
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
This course provides an opportunity for regular education students and special education students to participate in an expression of the arts. This is designed for students interested in developing leadership skills and learning to work with special populations. The class is set up to have each student gain an appreciation and understanding of each other's abilities in the arts. Students will be expected to participate in creative collaborative projects that demonstrate their ability to teach skills to a student with disabilities. The class naturally fosters new friendships among the Unified Art classmates and promotes student leadership and social competencies. Students are welcome to repeat this course multiple semesters.

In this semester course, students will learn how to navigate industry standard programs in order to digitally sketch, illustrate, paint, draw, and manipulate imagery. traditional art techniques using modern technology to solve artistic problems. Various themes, artist styles and movements will be discussed and students will be able to focus on the development of a variety of skills and techniques using a digital platform. Students will have practical use of real-world applications for careers in the 21st century arts industry.

This is a semester course for those students who wish to continue in art. Students will concentrate on a variety of media and techniques used in drawing applications. Originality and creative problem-solving is stressed. Media highlighted in this course will be graphite, colored pencil and ink. Students will work from direct observation and realistic depiction of form. A sketchbook is required for the class. Assessments are based on knowledge of artists, art styles, and art terms discussed in class as well as development of skills and techniques.

This is a semester course for those students who wish to continue in art. Students will concentrate on a variety of media and techniques used in painting applications. Originality and creative problem-solving is stressed. Media highlighted in this course will be watercolor and acrylic on paper, board and canvas.. Students will incorporate direct observation working toward expressive painting techniques. A sketchbook is required for the class. Assessments are based on knowledge of artists, art styles, and art terms discussed in class as well as development of skills and techniques.

Prerequisite: 902: Intro to Art Pathway
This is a semester course that explores techniques and develops skills in the ceramic medium taught with an appreciation of the rich history and well-known artists in this particular form of art expression. Various themes, artist styles and movements will be discussed and students will be able focus on their own individual style in this class. Students will utilize their own style to communicate their themes, ideas and feelings through art making. Students will learn a variety of hand building techniques and experiment with underglazes and glazes.

In this semester course students will build upon the skills, techniques and processes learned in foundational art courses and will be required to complete projects that focus on intermediate and advanced sculptural techniques. Various themes, artist styles and movements will be discussed and students will be able to express their own personal style through a variety of sculptural mediums. Students will utilize their own style to communicate their themes, ideas, and feelings through art making.
930 AP Studio Art College 1 Credit
Grades 11, 12
Prerequisite: Permission of the Dept. Chair and previous instructor
The AP Studio Art program allows for highly motivated students with a serious interest in the visual arts to take a college-level class in high school. Students must have prior art knowledge and skills as well as an advanced understanding of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Students may utilize technology and incorporate digital art within the coursework. Critiques, artist research, sketching and working outside of class are critical to student success in this course. Students are required to submit a portfolio to College Board consisting of 15 works of art as their "exam". Students will be evaluated on their personal theme, style, concept and ability to demonstrate their understanding of a variety of media, techniques and processes to elevate the quality of their finished work.
