Beaver Ridge

Outdoor Experience

Our Mission

The goals of the Beaver Ridge Outdoor Experience include developing skills in several areas. Students learn and practice survival skills such as shelter building, fire building, and camp cooking throughout this experience. However, there are also broader, lifelong skills for students to develop: problem solving, team building, cooperation, building community connections, and showing respect for the natural world.

An Overview

Prior to Beaver Ridge Week, students will have the opportunity to discuss outdoor survival skills with experts who will visit us in Cumberland. These experts will cover important information on sleep systems, shelter building, layering clothing, hypothermia, and outdoor adventures in general. Take a look at the page titled "Guest Speakers" for more information!

In addition to special speakers, students will learn fire building, shelter building, camp cooking, and knot tying from the sixth-grade staff. They will get to practice honing their skills on school grounds (including the school forest) under the supervision of the school staff. In addition, students will read and discuss one or both novels Hatchet by Gary Paulson and To Build a Fire by Jack London in their Language Arts classes.
