Renfroe Middle School opened it's doors in 1972. The first Band Director to start the band program was Mrs. Arlene Woods of Covington, Georgia. She served the Band program from 1972 through the end of the 1976-1977 school year. Mrs. Woods still resides in Covington, Georgia and is active with the Georgia Music Educators Association as well as teaching a private flute studio of young middle and high school age students.
The next director served a short time from 1977 until I believe 1984. Her name was April Sawyer Bell. April's husband played percussion for the Atlanta Symphony.
Following Mrs. Bell, was David Williams. Mr. Williams served the Renfroe Band for 34 years, his entire teaching career. During that time Renfroe and the City Schools of Decatur grew from a small student population of approximately 500 to now opening it's doors to 1350 students today. There have been many additions to the Renfroe facility and the current Band room is one of those additions. David spent a year in a small classroom off the 1600 wing/hall before moving into the new facility in January of 2018.
Renfroe has a rich history and the Band students are now moving into a new chapter with the addition of Mrs. Christine Kraemer, current Band Director, to the Renfroe Faculty.
